ISDN
is a viable solution for individuals and small networks when other
high speed connection options are not available. It is capable
of transmitting voice and data over the same pair of copper wires
in an all-digital format. ISDN is readily available as it works
over standard telephone lines. Though much faster than analog,
it does still require a dial-in process. However, ISDN supports
both on demand dial out and dial in such as might be used by telecommuters
or after hours workers. The downside of ISDN is that it is a usage
based service and potentially very expensive. You cannot host
servers on an ISDN connection and it is not as fast as DSL or
T1 connections.
ISDN Speed:
provides speeds up to 128 Kbps.
Burstable
and Frame Relay solutions are ideal for businesses who have mission
critical applications that require fast, always on, reliable and
proven technologies. These connections are suited for any business
conducting e-commerce and need a substantial investment in hardware
and service. T1 service can be twice as expensive as DSL. However,
DSL is a "best effort service" and reliant on the telecom
infrastructure. Fractional T1 or Burstable T1 service provides
bandwidth of up to 1.5 Megabits per second on a 24 hours-a-day,
7 days-per-week basis. Basically when you pay for a fractional
T1 line you are leasing only the amount of the T1 lines' 24 channels
to meet your needs. Fractional T1 circuits are upgradeable and
bandwidth can be increased by adding 56Kbps or 64Kbps fractions
which increases performance (i.e. from 128Kbps to 256Kbps).
